My work combines installation and painting to consider themes of the body and its many relationships. I am thinking about the body as a vehicle for experience as well as a medium that leaves marks– the way physical bodies transfer stories as textures onto objects, homes, and spaces; accumulations become self portraits.
I am interested in creating immersive environments that sensorly engage the viewer while putting their own body in context with the work. My installations often involve drawn images paired with sound, video projection, or tactile material to create a specific experience. All of these elements act as shadows and reflections of my own body, experiences of femininity, and memories.
This work is informed in part by autotopography–a term that was coined by art historian Jennifer Gonzalez that describes the way we use objects to “map” ourselves; that the things we collect, the ways we decorate and inhabit our spaces, or the everyday messes we create are things that reveal our personal stories and histories.
Overall, my current collection of work is a consideration of the body both physically and tangentially. In upcoming and ongoing projects, such as my continuing series titled, “Don’t Hit Your Head on the Ceiling Fan,” I continue to use installation to further work with these themes.
